March 31 is World Backup Day and this is a great time to remind you of the importance of backing up documents, photos and other data that we collect on computers or phones.
Why create backups? "This is one of the best and most basic ways to protect data and information from loss or destruction," the government press release reads, and that is perhaps the best explanation. Often, backups are the only way to recover accidentally deleted data or data lost due to disk damage.
We can store backups on a physical medium or in the cloud. In the first case, we are talking about external drives or USB. Unfortunately, physical media is exposed to the same threats as the disk on which we store the original files - they are susceptible to damage and can be attacked by malware.
For this reason, cloud-based solutions "that allow you to store files in a vendor-secured environment (on the Internet)" are becoming more and more popular.

Safe cloud backup
To be able to store data in the cloud, it is enough to choose one of this type of services and use it via a website or application. The most popular services of this type are Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud.
These "virtual" drives offer free space, so we can easily back up the most important files and access them from any device, such as a smartphone. Phones more and more often store data primarily in the cloud, which further facilitates file synchronization when replacing the smartphone.
"Automation of the backup process, ease of access regardless of location and security - these are the advantages that convince entrepreneurs and are appreciated by employees", explained Marek Zagórski, government plenipotentiary for cybersecurity, describing cloud services.
He also added that both the storage of data in the cloud and on physical media has its advantages and disadvantages, so it is worth getting to know the topic more closely to choose the best solution for you. You can also read more about it in our guides:

What else is worth remembering?
The government also reminds you of a few points when it comes to making backups: Backup is only half the battle. You need to be sure that your copies are correct and usable. Therefore, it is worth periodically testing if our copies are working properly. When recovering the system from a backup - before using it again - it is worth remembering to install the latest patches and security updates. When using cloud solutions, read the policy carefully and check the supplier's reputation. Make sure it meets your requirements, e.g. if it supports strong authentication such as two-step verification.
