Samsung promised us a new version of the Galaxy Z Fold2 with 5G, a larger external screen and a few other fixes. I checked how this model works in practice. Not only is there something to look at, but also the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G promises to be a very practical tool for work. Samsung has added several solutions in the software that completely change the way you use this phone.
Galaxy Z Fold2 5G - you are to love it at first sight
The Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is not the phone you will choose after spending many hours over the tables with specifications and watching reviews on the web. This is a completely different category. This phone is meant to catch the attention of you and everyone around you. You can buy it or not, but you will not pass by it indifferently. The Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is a luxury product, a status symbol and a demonstration of a deep interest in new products. Samsung calls this segment luxury-tech.
Ignoring this model is simply impossible, especially if you get a variant in a crazy, brown casing. Black did not make such an impression on me. At the same time, black is "mirror", which in my dictionary means the same as "forever dirty". Dear Samsung, I am asking for more phones with frosted glass casing.
Buy now - pay laterThis is the same finish as the Galaxy Note20 series, which debuted in August. The outer screen was covered with Gorilla Glass Victius and a protective foil. The large, flexible screen inside is covered with ultra-thin glass and there is also an additional foil on it.
It's worth taking a look at the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Flip2 5G. The phone has a slightly different shape than the previous generation. First of all, the decomposed one is 9 mm thinner (it is 6 mm, the previous one was 6.9 mm). As a result, after unfolding I have in my hands an almost square tablet 7.6 inch (128.2 x 159.2 mm) with a thickness of 6 mm. In addition, it is perfectly balanced. The battery has been divided into two parts so that neither side is too pregnant.
It is worth adding here that the maximum refresh rate of the main screen is 120 Hz, but it will be lowered if the displayed content is static. This will positively affect the battery life, but will not reduce the comfort of using the phone. The external screen can refresh at 60 Hz.
The phone weighs 282 grams, but it doesn't feel heavy. When folded, it is 17.1 mm thick at the spine and 13.8 mm on the opposite side. When folded up, it holds securely and surprisingly comfortably, although one-handed operation is out of the question.
A hinge that changes everything
The new Galaxy Z Fold2 5G has a hinge similar to that of the Galaxy Z Flip. This means it can be opened in almost any position. It's about time! Galaxy Fold, which can only be open or only closed, imposes inconvenient restrictions on the user. Here we have complete freedom to position positions. Samsung says the phone will hold well in the 17-115 ° range, but I'm sure the hinge will last longer.
You need to use some force to put the phone together. There is no chance that it will collapse by itself under the influence of shocks or inertia. As a result, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G can be placed in similar positions to laptops with a screen rotated by 360 °.
The cleaning of the hinge was also done well and I was finally able to find out what was going on with the dirt that would be washed away. If sand gets into the mechanism, 3-4 folds are enough to get rid of it. All the particles will be brushed onto the phone's back by the brushes in the hinge. Then just wipe them off the housing.
8K is less important than a practical interface
Yes, you will not record an 8K movie with this phone. And all in all good - there is nothing to watch it on anyway. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will impress with several other Android camera and overlay features.
As in the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, you can record audio from the selected source, including Bluetooth headphones. Image stabilization and tracking people moving in the frame are phenomenal. If you want to make videos yourself, you will also appreciate the preview image on the small screen. After all, you can arrange the frame properly before recording!
On a small screen, you can run two applications at the same time next to each other, and on the large screen, three. We have a split screen or a floating window at our disposal. Applications minimized from the window view will be visible as "bubbles" in Messenger chats. Handling the phone in this way takes a bit of getting used to (some applications behavior is still unpredictable for me), but it gives completely new possibilities for using Android.
The possibility of leaving a bent phone was mapped by the interface, the same as in the Galaxy Z Flip model. In many system applications, Google applications, in the Microsoft Office suite and several others, the interface will adjust to display the appropriate elements at the bottom and top of the screen.
Samsung encourages more application authors to use this solution, but so far there are few of them. I hope that this solution will be adopted with time, because I see great potential in it. For me, it is a return to the roots of smartphones. I associate this way of working with Nokia Communicator.
Luxury accessories for a luxury smartphone
There are not many accessories for the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G yet. Samsung does not yet have a car holder for it (you can use a regular phone or a tablet if you want to use navigation on the unfolded screen) or a pad with a mount. There is a case that impressed me a lot.
Samsung offers us a leather case or made of aramid fibers. I really liked the latter. This material is extremely resistant to fatigue, abrasion, does not burn or melt. In addition, it is very nice, light and thin.
I liked this case because it allows you to put the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G unfolded. The phone is very stable and at a good angle so that you can comfortably watch a movie on it ... or work. And this is where I see the greatest potential of the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G - at work in different places. All you need is a case, a foldable Bluetooth keyboard and you can leave your laptop at home. In my opinion, this is the future. If, like me, you need a word processor, a browser and an email client, this is the hardware for you.
Lest it was only work and work - on the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G you can also play Xbox games via xCloud. You just need to equip yourself with a controller with a "tablet" holder.
If you have a monitor or TV at your disposal, you can also use the DeX mode, in which Android offers a classic desktop and windows. This model allows you to use DeX wirelessly via Miracast communication.
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to say goodbye to flat smartphones. In fact, she was ready for it, long before the premiere of the first Fold. However, it was only the second installment and its software that convinced me that it was a good direction.
