WhatsApp is disappearing from millions of phones around the world

WhatsApp is disappearing from millions of phones around the world

It used to be that apps were available on older devices, and now the company announces that those who have iOS 8 or older, or Android 2.3.7 or older, will lose the ability to use WhatsApp from day 1 February.

Looking at Google's statistics, which was last updated in May 2019, 0.3% of the 2.5 billion people (or about 75 million) are still using Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread (yes, that was the version) or also earlier versions. However, Apple did not specify how many people did not update from iOS 8. So theoretically, users with older systems can upgrade to a newer version of the software in order to continue using the WhatsApp application. Thanks to this, they will receive apk support, but also patches for the operating system.

WhatsApp without support for old devices

Unfortunately, most older devices cannot be updated due to lack of support. For example, the iPhone 4s, which is still quite popular, has not received a newer system than iOS 7. In order to use WhatsApp, such people are forced to exchange their phone for a newer model. Theoretically, WhatsApp may now be the bad one, because it withdraws support, but in practice, such a solution makes sense, mainly for security reasons - it is difficult to secure applications in such old operating systems.

If anyone is to blame, it's manufacturers who don't release updates for older devices. Here, however, we bounce back from the wall again, because the old devices are not so efficient to bear the new versions of the system. Thus, we create a closed circle in which the only winner sooner or later will be the phone manufacturer, because the user will have to replace the device with a newer one.
