No device connected to the network is completely safe against cyber criminals. This applies not only to computers, but also smartphones.Recently, thieves are increasingly attacking smartphones, wanting to get access to money above all
Źródło: Adobe StockYou are afraid that your smartphone will be damaged, so you secure it properly. You buy a supertward protective glass or modern screen protecting coatings. You put on a case with reinforced sides and horns, so that in the event of a fall, the impact is best depreciated.
Do you feel your smartphone safe?Physically - certainly yes.Unfortunately, the threat to you is also that you use a device that is not properly protected against cybercriminals' attacks. And you are more and more often targeted by mobile devices.
More and more attacks
ESET, In addition to producing programs to protect computers and smartphones, has been monitored for years that appears on the web.According to the latest report, which covers the period from May to August 2021 - the number of detected programs attacking devices with Android increased by 33 percent!
The most common purpose of the attack is to gain access to user finances. The number of these threats increased in a few months by almost 50 percent.Among the most common ESET experts mention the Vultur software. This is a Trojan that attacks online banking and applications that are cryptocurrency portfolios. This software is all the more dangerous because criminals use a different way of obtaining access data than before. This is no longer an HTML overlay, but a screen recording and recording virtual keys. Thanks to this solution, criminals can obtain login details in a more difficult way to detect.
Flubot is another threat to Android, which has been spreading recently, also attackers, also attacking banking applications. Here, the method of operation is several stages and uses the mechanisms used during online purchases. The victims receive an SMS, which is impersonated under the news of a popular courier company. In the SMS there is a link to the application installation. An unconscious (or hurrying) user can install a Trojan in this way, whose task is mainly to steal credit card numbers and authentication data in mobile banking.
Android is also increasingly attacked using spy programs downloaded by users from the Internet, excluding applications. Many people want to use them, e.g. to follow the device of another user, but they themselves become victims of spying, and their data is stolen by criminals.
iPhones and iPads also threatened
Apple devices are also not safe, although the attacks on them are definitely less, which is not surprising that Androids are much more widespread.According to ESET experts, the last significant threat is the possibility of using gaps in Apple Pay and Visa.
Usually, to pay through the application on your smartphone, the user must confirm the payment with a fingerprint, face scan or PIN code. And this protects the transaction to a satisfactory extent. However, in 2019, Apple introduced the option of an express paying contact, which customers use, for example, when buying tickets. The smartphone then remains blocked and the transaction is carried out quickly and "in flight".
The problem, however, is that this opened criminals to pay with such a smartphone any amount without user authorization. For example, they use another smartphone that works like a card reader.A similar to the iPhone with the "Express Travel" mode enabled allows you to select any amount from the user Visa card (to the card limit of course).
How to defend yourself?
The first ESET expert council is a transition to two -component authentication mode wherever possible. So each transaction carried out using the phone should be authorized, e.g. biometric or PIN and additionally with a code sent by the bank in an SMS.
Źródło: materiały partneraThis applies not only to banking applications.Studies show that we do not use two -component authentication, e.g. only less than 2.5 percent of Twitter users use this option.
Another advice is blocking the phone screen.Still many people do not use it, at the same time with installed banking applications, introduced credit cards and-not less important-applications with access to e-mail or other sensitive data. For a thief, such a smartphone is like an open safe, just reach for a shelf and grab everything that has any value.
Finally the third advice - use anti -virus software.Experts note that while we have a great awareness of threats on computers on which we often have installed security programs, we completely underestimate them for our smartphones.Meanwhile, they have become a tool that we use the most - it is enough to say that over 53 percent of traffic on the Internet is carried out using mobile devices.
How does the antivirus protect the smartphone?
To start with, let's say that the word "anti -virus" is not really here.Protection against viruses is only one of the functions of modern security systems - both on computers and on smartphones.ESET has called its product ESET Mobile Security, and this seems to reflect the essence of the matter - mobile security in all aspects.
The program offers basic functions, such as active real -time scanning installed applications and downloaded files for malware, such as viruses, Trojans or ransomware (programs blocking access to the device usually with a ransom demand for unlocking). This process happens in the background and does not burden the components of the device. You can also cause scanning on demand with a summary report.
The ESET Mobile Security also has anti -paper mechanisms that protect against pages that resemble, for example, banking pages and are intended to steal login data. The program also allows you to manage application permissions and secure selected applications with an additional password. It also checks the safety of the home Wi-Fi network, verifying the router and all connected device for their susceptibility to attacks.
ESET Mobile Security also protects a smartphone that has been lost or stolen.By marking it on his account, ESET as lost, we make it with every suspicious activity, e.g. entering a wrong PIN, photos of a person who holds a smartphone in his hand is taken. You can also display a personalized message on the screen of the lost device, e.g. with a request to return it.The smartphone position is also updated on a regular basis - you can see it on the map.The phone will also be automatically blocked if someone replace the SIM card in it.
The ESET software for Android is available as a separate product, but it can also be bought together with the system for computers - ESET Cyber Security. The Android version can be downloaded from the Google Play store and test its functions for 30 days for free.
