Smartphone insurance - basics

According to various studies, 1 out of 4 smartphones purchased is damaged in the first year after purchase, and 8 out of 10 damages relate to screen damage/cracking. The warranty usually does not cover this type of damage, so the insurance remains, the cost of which will often be much lower than replacing the display or repairing the smartphone in the service.

When can you insure your phone?

Mobile insurance can usually be done within 30 days or up to 3 months from the date of purchase (but I also found an option up to 6 months) for a period of one, two or three years . If we want to insure the smartphone display itself, it is also possible with older devices.

You can insure your phone right away when you buy the device, for example in popular electromarkets, from the operator (Orange, Play, Plus and T-Mobile) or using the available offers of insurance companies. Each time it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the general terms and conditions, which usually hide the actual scope of insurance and exceptions in which this insurance will not be included.

Screenity

We start with the simplest insurance, i.e. the display itself. Screenity allows you to conclude such insurance using a mobile application for Android and iOS.

After installing it and carrying out two tests of the current condition of the display, we can insure it regardless of the age of the device. The insurance amount is PLN 12 paid monthly for a year or PLN 130 once. The insurance covers the collection of a damaged smartphone, repair up to PLN 1,000 and delivery back to the door. The insurance period is 12 months.

EURO RTV AGD

This one of the most popular electromarkets offers two smartphone insurances. One limited only to the display, as above in the form of door to door service, but at a much higher price. With annual insurance, we pay PLN 42.50 for 10 months or PLN 425 once.

The full version of insurance is even more expensive, extended to damage the device, for example by flooding or replacing the device in the event of theft. Here the cost is PLN 680 or 10 installments of PLN 68 each.

Simplesurance/Revolut

We can take out another smartphone insurance on the Simplesurance website or in the Revolut app. The insurance directly on the website is extended by theft insurance and for a period of up to two years. Here, the condition is to make insurance up to 3 months from the purchase of the device. In the Revolut application, this period is extended to 6 months, but the insurance lasts only for a year.

The insurance works worldwide, it covers damage to the display caused by, for example, a fall or technical fault, damage to the smartphone caused by errors, clumsiness or ignorance related to the use of the device, liquid spillage, fire, short circuit or vandalism.

The cost of such insurance depends on the value of the phone. For the iPhone 7, for example, it will amount to PLN 239.95, and in the case of extending the insurance to include the theft of a smartphone - PLN 269.95.

What is important, at the time of making a claim, an additional "excess" is required, which also depends on the amount of insurance. How much can it be? We learn this from the Revolut application, which uses the same insurer.

Revolut calls this surcharge the excess amount. In the case of the iPhone 7, it is PLN 154, but also the cost of the insurance itself is lower. With weekly payments, it will be PLN 3.89 for 12 months, and a one-off payment for a year of insurance is PLN 175.99. However, this insurance does not cover smartphone theft.

Digital Care/Coverise

All operators from the "big four" offer smartphone insurance prepared in cooperation with Digital Care, but the same company offers its own Coverise package.

Insurance can be purchased from them for a smartphone purchased up to 30 days back for one year. It costs PLN 99 and covers the repair of a damaged and flooded smartphone or the replacement of a damaged display up to PLN 1,000.

Orange

Orange offers two phone insurance plans as part of the Orange Smart Care service. The basic one costs PLN 11.99 per month (PLN 131.89 for the first year of insurance) and covers the repair of only the damaged display, or also the housing, camera and button if they are also damaged along with the display. In the event of flooding with water, we can count on drying the smartphone and replacing the motherboard.

The more expensive Orange Smart Care Premium plan costs PLN 15.99 per month (PLN 175.89 for the first year of insurance) and includes comprehensive removal of the effects of flooding, repair of all possible damage to the smartphone or replacement with a new one.

Importantly, the first plan allows any number of repairs per year, but up to PLN 1,200, and the second one - one repair, but without a cost limit.

Play

Play has two versions of smartphone insurance. The first display insurance is a basic option for PLN 10 per month (first year of insurance PLN 110) covers only the replacement of a damaged display up to PLN 1,000, the MAX option costs PLN 16 per month (first year of insurance PLN 176), which additionally includes a repair caused by flooding the phone with a limit cost to the price of the device.

The second version of insurance in Play to - Safe phone. Its cost depends on the value of the phone. With the most expensive smartphones, we will pay PLN 34.99 per month, which after a year will amount to PLN 419.88.

Plus

Plus also offers two variants of phone insurance. Device service, in two versions - Premium and SIM. Both cost PLN 10 per month or this cost is already included in the subscription, but the Premium version is available only for devices purchased in 0% installments in Plus, and the SIM version for devices already owned or purchased in a different way.

The second version of the insurance covers only display damage and costs PLN 4.99 per month for subscription customers, and customers using this insurance from the level of the Android or iOS mobile application will pay PLN 7 for it.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile has three phone insurance plans. Basic costs PLN 9.99 per month and includes replacement of a damaged display or repair after flooding with liquid up to PLN 1,000.

The Standard Plan costs PLN 13.99, PLN 18.99 or PLN 29.99, depending on the value of the insured phone, and covers the repair of any damage to the smartphone up to its value or replacement with a new one.

The most expensive Premium version costs PLN 15.99, PLN 22.99 or PLN 34.99, and it includes insurance against theft or unauthorized use of the smartphone.

Do you think it's worth insuring your phone?

Personally, I think it depends on the value of the smartphone. When buying it up to PLN 2,000, an additional expense of PLN 500-600 is difficult to justify, unless we actually regularly damage newly purchased smartphones. If not, you might consider protecting the display itself here. In the case of more expensive smartphones, however, it is worth considering buying such comprehensive insurance.
