MacOS 12 Monterey review - even closer to iOS and not necessarily adequate to new MacBooks Pro

Where does the name Macos Monterey come from?

Over the years, Apple called the next versions of its system wild cats - there was Puma, Tiger, Lew.In 2014, the company decided to change the names (cats ended 😉) and names related to important points on the map of California were introduced.First he was Mavericks, and in 2020 Big Sur appeared with the premiere of Mac OS 11.In 2021 it is Monterey, i.e. the peninsula north of the Big Sur region.At the same time, it is worth noting that in 2001-2019 the Mac OS X 10 was developed.And subsequent versions were marked as 10.1, 10.2 etc..In 2020, Big Sur (along with the transition from Intel infrastructure to his own processors) received the designation 11, and Monterey is the 12 version.

Although Monterey is an independent, large version of the system, the number of new products is quite limited.Anyway, since Apple has switched to the annual publishing cycle, these changes between the systems are not so noticeable.In the case of Monterey, this is particularly visible, because most of the changes are primarily the introduction of similar functions that are present in mobile Apple systems.At the same time, the most important function, taking into account the advantage of the Apple ecosystem over the competition, is not available in the first version of the system and will appear in later updates.

I am talking about a universal control, which means that without configuration, the mouse and keyboard of our Apple computer, will also work on the iPad and, for example, the second computer next to it.We will also be able to transfer files or graphic elements on the "drag and drop" basis as if all these devices were connected to each other and constituted the whole.For example, a photo on the iPad will be able to drag on the presentation created on the computer with one mouse movement.This solution, in combination with the other functions of work continuity, will make these devices really harmonize and can be used at work without any add -ons.For now, however, this option can not be found in the start version of the system.

News from MacOS Monterey - focus modes, better notes, shortcuts, changes in safari and more

Other novelties are not that significant.Although certainly for many they can be useful and more or less every MacOS user will appreciate them and will reach for them.

Focus modes are also a solution known from iOS and iPados, which is important, it also works automatically with other ecosystem devices.After configuration, our computer may, for example, have a part of notifications off in operation mode and completely disabled professional information when we are in entertainment mode;You can significantly limit applications in sleep mode etc..

Fast notes popping out of the corner of the screen are also available on iPados.This is a function that allows you to create entries in the application notes.The application itself also gained better functions of sharing and cooperation.Thanks to this, it is quite an effective tool for daily teamwork, provided that users use the MacOS system or use functions available from the ICloud page level.com.

Changes in Safari are not as controversial as in the case of iOS.But there were no changes in the next beta versions and the compact card view was abandoned.For this we have card groups or links made available to us from iMessage.Just like on mobile devices, the guy's functions have been expanded, but at the start we will not find SharePlay.This option will appear in subsequent updates.It is to facilitate watching series or listening to music, but also sharing the screen.An important convenience is the possibility of planning conversations on guy, which is also compatible with browsers on Windows and mobile devices with Android.Thanks to this, guy can also be used without excluding people with other equipment and treated more seriously, for example in business talks.

An additional function is AirPlay on Mac, i.e. the ability to share an image from the iPhone on the computer screen as if it was a TV screen, similar to fast sound transmission from the phone to computer speakers.Maps were also refreshed and the function of reading the text from photos was introduced.It is worth remembering that, like in the iPhone, for this option to work in Poland, it must be marked in the settings related to the region and language.It works really well and allows you to copy the text from photos.

A shortcut application has appeared on MacOS, which allows you to automate some activities and there are shortcuts created on mobile devices.Fortunately, it does not replace the automator, but works next to it.Is more "civilian" than the automator.After all, both solutions require some knowledge and willingness to adapt them to their needs to be functional.However, if we look for the network or start to "entertain" it ourselves, we are able to speed up our work very much.

Monterey is also iCloud+, i.e. greater privacy in e-mail and website browsing for users of this service.At the moment, however, the private transfer of iCloud is in beta and does not always work properly.The system also has other minor improvements, including low energy consumption mode.

Is it worth installing Macos Monterey?

If you have a compatible Apple computer, then the MacOS Monterey installation is certainly recommended.Although people working on specific applications should stop and verify on the web if the system works correctly.It is also important to make a backup.Remember that Mac, unlike Apple mobile devices.

From the utility side, I honestly admit that working on MacOS 12 from July I did not notice too many real changes in functioning, and I installed a new system myself due to problems with the Spotlight indexing in the previous version of the system.And here I managed to fix my problem.It is evidenced by the fact that only when preparing for this text I noticed quick notes from the side of the screen.For me, the most interesting function, in the form of universal control, is not available yet, and I have to convince others to the wider use of guy.However, it is these two options that I consider crucial.
