How to automatically make a gif from a video on iPhone

There are many iPhone apps that can convert videos to GIFs. However, with so many options, the problem becomes the choice. Which app to choose? Free but simple? Or maybe one of the paid ones, offering many different additional functions? Maybe you don't need an app at all. Think about using a shortcut.

Thanks to the Shortcuts app and the corresponding shortcut, you can easily convert any movie stored on your iPhone into an animated GIF file - no need to install any app. Whether you shot the video yourself or downloaded it from the Internet, you can launch the Video To GIF shortcut to select the video and turn it into an animated image in no time. An additional advantage of Video To GIF shortcut is that it does not take up much space on your device, processes video in just a few seconds and maintains high video quality, unlike free applications.

What You Need To Know Before Installing The Shortcut

Make sure you're using iOS 14 or later. In older versions of iOS, the Video To GIF shortcut will not work. You must also have enabled the ability to add untrusted shortcuts to the Shortcuts application, and enabled access of the Shortcuts application to iCloud.

Before going on to the next part of this text, make sure you understand well what abbreviations are and what the consequences may be of using them. Everything about untrusted shortcuts can be found in the entry How to enable the download of untrusted shortcuts on the iPhone. The author of the text and the AppleMobile.pl editors do not take responsibility for the consequences and potential damage to the iPhone user using untrusted shortcuts. The user does so entirely at his own risk.

Add Video To GIF shortcut to your iPhone

You can find Video To GIF in the RoutineHub repository. To download it to your phone, scan the code below with your iPhone.

When the Camera app recognizes the code, a notification banner will appear at the top of the screen. Swipe down on the notification. In the Website QR code window, click the Download Shortcut button. The Add Shortcut tab is displayed. Scroll to the very bottom and click the Add Untrusted Shortcut button. The shortcut you added will be visible on the My Shortcuts tab of the Shortcuts application.

Before you start converting

For the successful video to GIF conversion, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First of all, keep in mind that the video you want to convert should be relatively short. The optimal length of the video material is from a few to several seconds. Otherwise, the conversion itself may take a long time. Due to the specifics of the shortcut, the image quality is directly related to the video length. The longer the video, the greater the drop in quality. Plus, keep in mind that GIF files are relatively heavy. A 30-second high-quality video will turn into a GIF file weighing about 300 MB. Therefore, before you start converting, trim the video file to the necessary fragment. You can do it though in the Photos app.

Convert video to GIF using a shortcut

Remember: the first time you use the shortcut, it will ask for access to the photo library; if you decline, the shortcut will not work.

  1. Launch the Shortcuts app and go to the My Shortcuts tab.
  2. Tap the Video to GIF shortcut tile
  3. An image selector will appear where you can browse through photos and videos stored on your iPhone. Choose the video you want.
  4. After selecting the video, you'll go back to the Shortcuts app. Converting the file may take from several seconds to several minutes. It all depends on the length of the selected movie and the speed of your iPhone. The progress bar on its tile shows that the shortcut is running. Do not close the Shortcuts application while the shortcut is running, so as not to interrupt the conversion process.
  5. Once the conversion is complete, a preview of your GIF will appear. If you are satisfied with it, tap the Share button, visible in the upper right corner. From there, you can save the GIF to the Photos app, iCloud cloud, and also share it via text messages, iMessage, email, AirDrop, social media, and any other third party apps you have installed on your iPhone.
