Apple has once again decided to improve the cameras. This year's iPhone 12 models have the ability to record video in Dolby Vision HDR.
Basic models - iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 record in Dolby Vision HDR at 30 frames per second. The more expensive models of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max record the image using Dolby Vision HDR in 60 frames per second.

Dolby Vision HDR offers much greater depth to recordings and improves their quality, but causes some compatibility issues. Some older video programs and versions of operating systems are not able to correctly play video with Dolby Vision HDR codec. In this case, the displayed video is significantly overexposed.
Due to compatibility issues, Apple has disabled Dolby Vision HDR by default on new iPhone models. Today we show you how to enable / disable Dolby Vision. We also check how much video files with and without HDR weigh.
How to enable Dolby Vision HDR recording on iPhone 12?
To start recording in Dolby Vision HDR, go to Settings> Camera> Record Video and select HDR Video (High Efficiency). After activating this option, new iPhone models record in 10 bits with Dolby Vision at 30 frames per second (iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12) or 60 frames per second (iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max).
Unfortunately, classically for Apple, we will not quickly change the options directly from the Camera application. You should go to system settings every time. From the camera level, we will only change the video recording resolution and the number of recorded frames.
Apple boasts that thanks to Dolby Vision, the iPhone 12 can keep up to 60 times more colors than the older models.
Where can we watch Dolby Vision HDR content?
Recording the material is just the beginning. The Dolby Vision HDR video can be watched directly on the screen of the iPhone 12. Dolby Vision HDR files can also be played on all Mac models introduced to the market in 2018 or later that have screens with 4K resolution.
We will also watch Dolby Vision HDR materials on all TVs compatible with this technology. You can also use Apple TV for this purpose.
How much does a Dolby Vision HDR video file weigh?
Wondering how much a Dolby Vision HDR compatible video file weighs? We will find the answer to this question after comparing 1 minute video clips.
A 60 second video file in 4K at 30 frames per second weighs:
Is Dolby Vision HDR worth using?
As Apple uses an effective 10-bit video compression format, it takes up less space than regular non-HDR recording. It is not possible to record video in Dolby Vision HDR in classic format. This means that we are forced to use the HEVC format, which may be a problem with older devices.
If you have Apple equipment, you can safely record in Dolby Vision HDR. If you want to keep full compatibility with older computers, better choose normal 4K recording in maximum compatibility mode. Unfortunately, this will translate into saving much larger files. Due to compatibility issues, we currently recommend classic video recording without HDR.
