Let's start with the Profoto brand itself.For some, it is a legend (not to say religion), for others, an overgrowth of form over content, with a cosmic price.The facts, however, are that this Swedish company has been producing photographic lighting since 1968., and in recent years regularly returns with new products that actually shock the price.Yes, it was M.in.In the case of Profoto A10, the "strongest studio lamp of the world", costing 5,000.PLN, which is twice as many as the top Canon or Sony lamps.Reporter Flash was distinguished not only by power, but also an unusual construction with a round burner.
Today, however, I want to present you a product from a completely different category, which is the latest Profoto B10X lamp.She debuted on September 9 with a larger B10X Plus model, and I already had the opportunity to look at it.
PROFOTO B10X - what is it eating and why this lamp costs 9 thousand.zloty?
Profoto B10X is a lamp not only directed to photographers, but also to filmmakers, because next to flash it also has continuous light.It is so strong that it will not only be used to model lighting in a photo session, but also as full lighting when filming.
The equipment has its own battery, so we can use it even outdoors.Profoto B10X, although it has a lot of power, surprises with a small size.The equipment weighs 1.5 kg, is well made and feel that we are dealing with a premium class product.The whole reaches the client in a very neat and solid case, but at a price of 9 thousand.PLN such care for details and accessories should not be surprising.
What power does Profoto B10X have?The manufacturer declares that in flash it is 250 WS, which is five times more than a typical reporter lamp.Such power is impressive, especially considering the very compact sizes of the lamp.The power can be adjusted in the range of 10 degrees aperture, with an accuracy of 1/10 of the aperture value.So we have a power level level.In turn, in continuous mode, the power of the LED diode is 3250 lumens, i.e. by 30 percent.more than in the predecessor.The color temperature can be regulated in the range of 3000-6500 K, and the CRI color reflection coefficient is in the range of 90-96.
The Profoto B10X lamp supports TTL and HSS (High Sync) technologies.In addition, the flash is reloaded very quickly, because the reloading of full power takes from 0.05 to 1.3 s, depending on the series and earlier working time.Noteworthy is the built -in profot radio receiver as well as Bluetooth connectivity, which the manufacturer hides under the proper name of Profoto Airx.
The lamp operation is very simple, and it consists of three buttons.
The entire service system is fast and extremely intuitive.Is based only on three buttons and on a large, legible screen.
The right button is a switch and a control flash.The middle knob (also acting as a button) allows you to set the lighting power on a 100 -level scale.We can also press the button and twist it, and then we regulate the power on ankle (faster but less precisely) every one aperture.The left button turns on the continuous light, and as the knob is responsible for the color of the lighting.Above the buttons we will find a large, very clear and intuitive display showing the current power.We can also display a menu on it, which is also extremely intuitive.
We will attach the Profoto B10X lamp on a tripod with a unscrewed butterfly.It has very high quality and precise tightening system, thanks to which even after putting on large softboxes, the whole is very stable.With large modifiers, however, a form of the handle could be used, thanks to which the adaptation of the angle of incidence of light would be more convenient.Catching the lamp directly by the can is not the most convenient.
A big plus is the built -in umbrella holder.However, if we want to use other system modifiers, we must buy a speedring adapter costing OK.PLN 500.You can also buy an adapter for the Bowens mounting system.
How does the lamp for PLN 9,000 fall in combination with the iPhone?
The network does not lack tests of the predecessor of the Profoto B10X lamp, i.e. the B10 model.It has been proven many times that it is a professional equipment in every inch, giving enormous potential for shaping light both outdoors and in the studio.Let's say directly that you can't expect anything else after a lamp for PLN 9,000.
Profoto, however, more and more promotes the use of her lamps in combination with the iPhone, which I decided to test.In many company materials, we see professional sessions made with a smartphone, and Profoto has been used even at cover sessions performed by crazy photographers working an iPhone.
So I said "checking".The manufacturer has prepared two applications for iOS with the names of profotocontrol and profotocamer.The first is used for remote control of power and lamp settings when we use it with a traditional camera.The second is the camera application that allows you to photograph in combination with the Profoto B10X lamp.The lamp evaporation is very simple and is done through Bluetooth connectivity.
The profotocamer application allows you to rely on automation or photograph in manual mode, choosing shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and white balance.Of course, we can also control the flash and temperature.In addition, the manufacturer predicted the Smart mode, in which we can choose on the scale, what effect we are interested in.On the left there is a neutral flash, on the right a "dramatic effect".
The most amazing is the fact that the application supports TTL measurement, like in a professional apparatus.This means that the Profoto B10X lamp is able to choose the power level for our manual exhibition settings.And indeed, a series of pre -brothers appears in front of the flash for the final selection of the lamp power.You can also see the operation of HSS mode, because there is no problem to photograph with very short shutter times.The application allows you to go down to 1/16000 s.Currently, the application only supports the main lens and telephone.Ultrashhero -angle and front lenses are not compatible with a lamp.What's more, we have this full service, i.e. the ability to connect many lamps and manage them in groups!
How does all this work in practice?Below is a photo gallery from the iPhone XR using the Profoto B10X lamp and the profotocamer application.Photos come straight from the smartphone and were not subjected to any editing, except for cutting and reduced size.
This shows that a good quality photo depends mainly on the light.I am absolutely not surprised that using professional lighting you can take an iPhone photo decorating warehouse covers.

Profoto B10X is to be not only a flash, but also a lamp of continuous light, thanks to which it is to be well checked when filming.In other words, the manufacturer encourages to use the modeling light to light up the stage when filming.I could not refuse to check it in practice.I used Profoto B10X for lighting in one movie published on Spider’s Web TV.The lamp was the only source of artificial light and the Phottix Raja softbox with a diameter of 85 cm was mounted on it.
Unfortunately, I am not happy with how the lamp works when filming.First of all, it gives too little light.The power is very comparable to the Old Religious (but still popular) Quadralite Videoled 600 costing ... 550 PLN.This excludes the use of the lamp outdoors.In turn, in the rooms during the day of power, it is not enough to make a lamp lighting for keylight.Draw the conclusions yourself from the movie posted above.Profoto B10X would definitely work better as a lamp lighting the background or as a versus for the main lighting.
The biggest disadvantage, in addition, disqualifying species is the fan sound in Profoto B10x.It turns on very quickly and is unfortunately loud.Even from a distance of ok.2 m clearly hear him on the recordings ... which you can also check in the movie, because I deliberately not cleaned the audio path from the noise.It is in this field that miniaturization has its consequences.A larger heat sink and fan would fit in a larger construction, so it would be quieter.
A big downside is also the battery attached to the set, allowing just just over an hour of continuous lighting at the maximum (i.e. not so great) power.In the case of photos it is better, because the battery is enough for OK.400 full -power flashes.An undoubted advantage is the ability to adjust the color temperature of the continuous light.
So how does Profoto B10X fall out?
To sum up, Profoto assures that the B10X lamp is a universal solution created for creators who photograph and film at the same time.When it comes to photos, the equipment will work great, but in terms of video the lamp is at a much lower level.It has low power, the battery is only enough for an hour of work, but the biggest problem will be a burdensome noise.All this means that when it comes to filming, this lamp can only be used in an emergency or low -binding backstage recordings.
If you have this in mind, and you will use Profoto B10X only for photos, you will be delighted with the lamp capabilities.This is a great product, although at the same time it is very expensive in relation to the offered power.
