We recently had a Spider's Web integration convention, for which I took the Galaxy Z Folda 2. Believe that during our meetings, the subject of phones is one of the last ones we want to discuss. Each of the people from the old Spider's Web guard has at least seven years of testing smartphones and has seen everything.
Meanwhile, this esteemed group of slightly jaded observers of new technologies practically snatched the Galaxy Z Folda 2 from their hands. The equipment was passed by nearly 40 people, and everyone was curious about how Fold 2 works in practice. The editors of Tech, Autoblog, Bizblog or Rozrywki - all wanted to see Fold 2 live and assemble it by hand.
Opinions varied, often extreme. Some people claimed that it was a device without the slightest sense. Others were delighted to say that they were looking at the future of the industry. Still others felt that they could buy such equipment if it cost three times less. However, there was no person who took Folda 2 in hand and said that it was boring equipment.
Galaxy Z Fold 2 won't go unnoticed. The equipment is of great interest, but is it comfortable in practice?
I won't keep you in suspense. Is not. When I switched to a classic smartphone after the tests, I felt relieved. In everyday use, I used Folda 2 mainly in a folded form, because this is the only way to handle it with one hand. And you must know that the folded Fold 2 can be really troublesome due to its very thick body and huge mass.
The equipment is almost 16 cm high and the thickness of two smartphones. Pregnant in a jacket and pants. Nothing to do with it on the bike. It falls off the navigation handle in the car due to the weight. It's hard to handle with one hand.
All these problems will accompany Z Folda 2 owners every day. For almost two weeks of testing, I was unable to get used to handling such a powerful smartphone, and you must know that I switched to it from the no less impressive size of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Galaxy Z Fold 2 plays in a completely different size league.
If you swallow the hefty size, you'll see a very successful smartphone.
It's hard to accept the size of a folded smartphone, but it gets much more interesting when you actually start using it. The front screen is finally what it should have been from the beginning. The panel is modern and very large, thanks to which the folded Fold can be used just like any other top smartphone.
On the front panel, we can browse the internet, take photos, scroll through social media, or talk on Messenger. In some applications, the screen could be slightly wider, but the 25: 9 aspect ratio can be quickly used in practice. Against the background of the tiny screen from the first generation of Galaxy Fold, we have gigantic progress here.
In addition, as with Samsung, the Super AMOLED screen looks beautiful. Its only drawback is the fact that it has the classic smoothness of operation at 60 Hz. It is a pity that we do not have 120 Hz fluidity here. This one will probably appear in the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Unfolded, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 shows what it's really capable of.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 shows its full potential when unfolded. Even after two weeks of testing, the moment of unfolding the smartphone is a celebration. It is an incredibly pleasant experience. The hinge puts a clear resistance, thanks to which it inspires confidence. The combination of perfect precision of operation and great finishing materials is something that Samsung engineers have done really well.
It only gets better when the inner screen is unfolded, but keep in mind that this requires two hands. I used the unfolded Fold mainly in the evenings, at home, when I had more time to interact with the smartphone.
After testing the first Fold, I didn't think that the Z Fold 2's internal screen would impress me, but the new design turned out to be much better. Thinner frames, a slightly larger diagonal and - above all - the lack of a notch make the internal screen very impressive. It works in many scenarios, from reading books (I recommend the Kindle application on Folda 2!), through browsing the Internet (bookmarks bar in the browser!), to watching videos.
Apps on the internal screen often display in tablet form, presenting much more content. Samsung has prepared its own applications brilliantly, and third-party companies also have a lot to offer here. YouTube or Spotify look great on the open screen. Unfortunately, a large part of the application still displays in the form of a stretched smartphone application, which does not always look good (Instagram, I'm looking at you).
Multi-application modes are still art for art's sake. In practice, only one works, in which we have two applications - one on the right and the other on the left. Samsung often boasts three or even four windows operating at the same time, but in practice with such a layout there is no question of any comfort. Let's not make a smartphone a PC, after all, these are completely different screen diagonals.
By the way, I really like the fact that both Z Folda 2 screens can have completely different icon layouts. This is praiseworthy, because the screens are used in different situations. On the front display I had mainly communication applications, as well as Twitter and Spotify, so everything that can be useful in the city. On the internal one, there were VOD, YouTube, photo galleries and Instagram applications.
You're probably wondering if the bend in the middle of the screen is actually visible after unfolding the smartphone. Yes, it happens, especially on a dark interface and when the screen reflects light. However, you can get used to it quickly.
A smooth refresh rate at 120 Hz is also very impressive on the internal screen, but it works in adaptive mode, as in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
How does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 stand the test of time?
I will not answer this question after two weeks of testing. During this time, nothing bad happened to the smartphone. The internal screen was not scratched in any way, although it had several occasions to do so.
Both screens this time are factory covered with a replaceable film, so if something gets scratched, it shouldn't be a problem. Just replace the foil. The inner foil had no scratches, but the outer one does not stand the test of time well. She almost draws herself.
Unfortunately, the whole structure still has a small gap after folding, which can get dust particles or grains of sand, which can do a lot of harm to a fairly soft flexible screen. It's worth remembering.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 did not cause any problems in terms of smoothness of operation.
Operation of both screens during the tests was always completely smooth. Even with several applications open at the same time, everything ran smoothly, and the applications for this were stored in memory for a very long time and there was no need to reload them after returning. The same smoothness applies to switching between two screens, both from a smaller to a larger one and vice versa. Now it is possible and you can define in which applications it should work.
I also did not notice any problems with overheating of the smartphone, which cannot be said about the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. This is probably due to the use of the Snapdragon 865+ processor in Z Folda 2.
If you're wondering how cameras fare, you won't be disappointed. The level of photos falls somewhere between the S20 and S10 series. Galaxy Z Fold 2 is equipped with three main camera lenses: ultra-wide angle, standard lens and 2x telephoto. Behind each is a matrix with a resolution of 12 megapixels.
Added to this are two selfie cameras, one per screen. All this means that both the main camera and selfie cameras can be used while looking at any screen. Thanks to this, all scenarios of using the camera are covered here, and with a vengeance.
What surprised me unexpectedly on the plus side?
Speakers! Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has incredibly loud speakers, while giving great sound quality. Watching movies with stereo sound was great. Of course, with movies, we have to accept black stripes above and below the material, resulting from pressing 16: 9 material onto a screen with an aspect ratio of about 4: 3. For me, this was not a big disadvantage, because as an iPad user, I am used to it.The second big surprise was the working time on a single charge. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is enough for 1.5 days of operation without any problems. I ended the day with a good 35-40 percent. battery charge. This allows you to forget about the power bank.
What was the unexpected downside?
Google Maps navigation works. During navigation, the smartphone sometimes went crazy and the map could not find the right direction. When holding the smartphone in my hands, the problem appeared sporadically, but I observed very big problems in the car, especially when using Android Auto.
Navigation was downright useless. She couldn't detect the correct direction of travel and kept getting lost. I do not know if it is the fault of the unusual design of the smartphone or maybe strange interference inside the car, but I have not had similar problems with any other smartphone.
The other downside is "stand mode". Galaxy Z Fold 2 allows you to place a partially folded smartphone on a flat surface and, for example, watch a movie on an external screen without using external stands. Unfortunately, the camera island sticks out so much that the smartphone in this position rocks terribly from side to side. This is stressful in the context of the price of the device.
Who is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 for?
It's easier to answer the question "who isn't it for". If you don't have free 9k. PLN, which you can spend on a smartphone without much regret, this is not the equipment for you. Such an extremely high price threshold makes the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 a very niche device. And what niche is Samsung targeting?
Officially, the manufacturer claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G is "luxury technology". It's a very accurate term. On the one hand, the equipment is very luxurious (not only because of the price, but also the quality of workmanship), and on the other, it is a dream come true for every technological geek. A foldable tablet with a flexible screen? Such equipment a moment ago could only be seen in science-fiction movies, and today it is a real product.
If you're looking for a modern electronic gadget and the price doesn't matter, you won't find anything better than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. And although this equipment is sometimes irritating in everyday use, it makes up for it every time you have time to unfold the screen. With this equipment, every other smartphone looks outdated, and the top iPhone evokes a pity smile at most.
At the same time, I feel sorry for Samsung that the Galaxy Buds and case disappeared from the box. We lost extras worth about PLN 700, and the price of the smartphone dropped by only PLN 300 compared to its predecessor. With such a development of the situation, folded smartphones will remain just a curiosity for a long time, which is a pity.
