We tested the most convenient way to Canal+ Online

A month ago, the Polish branch of CANAL+ made its CANAL+ online streaming platform available for the latest Samsung TV sets. The application is available for Korean smart TVs manufactured from 2018. The TV must be running Tizen 4.0 or later.

On any device

Samsung TV sets are the next devices on which we can have access to CANAL+ online. Previously, this platform already worked on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, in web browsers and on Android TV. Perhaps soon CANAL will also launch on WebOS, i.e. smart TV LG.

The application also works on CANAL+ BOX 4K, Apple TV, Mi Box and other Android TV boxes. Such a large number of different devices is a great challenge for the content provider responsible for implementing the service. Fortunately, the Polish branch is part of the French group, so the development of "apps" from equal platforms is faster, cheaper, and the result is faster and more stable programs. The fact that we are also dealing with an application from France on Samsung can be seen in one place in the menu, where a few French words were forgotten to be translated.

How does the application work?

The application for Tiznen is new, so it is not installed by default on Samsung TVs sold in Poland. We download it from the APPS application store, which is available on our TVs. This takes a few seconds. The application installed directly on the TV is subjectively the easiest and most convenient way to access the content of a given provider. Also Apple has recently made its Apple TV platform available as native apps for selected TV manufacturers, although it has its own box just like CANAL+.

To use the application, our TV must be connected to the Internet (via WiFi or Ethernet cable). The connection itself should have a speed greater than 1 Mbps. For the comfort of use, CANAL+ recommends a connection with a speed of at least 8 Mbps and 25 Mbps for programs in UHD quality.

How to order the package?

After installing the application, you should pay for the CANAL+ package online and optionally buy one of the three add-ons. There are no fixed-term contracts in CANAL+ online, which means that we can stop paying at any time. The purchase of packages itself is not possible from the position of the application on the smart TV. When we start the purchase procedure in the menu, our TV generates a QR code with a link to the website https://kup.pl.canalplus.com/samsungtv

On this site, we choose a package or a set of them, and at the end we pay with a card. It is even more convenient for PLAY customers, who can add the purchase to their mobile bill. 2 people will be able to use the service at the same time (2 streams).

Better than in the cinema

The application itself starts quickly and works stably, although movies and programs should start a little faster. The image quality is at a level known from other popular platforms. Of course, the quality of live TV channels also depends on what the broadcaster offers.

It's great that in the first version of the application for Samsung's smart TV there are user profiles known, for example, from the competing Netflix. The website has a search engine and a recommendation system supported by CANAL+. I missed a bit of "normal" TV program and cloud recorder. CANAL+ online users can rewind TV programs up to 8 hours in a very intuitive way. For selected content, you can choose from the original soundtrack, voice-over, dubbing or subtitles. We haven't found a split screen option yet, which is supposed to allow you to watch 4 channels at the same time. This function was announced by CANAL+ in a press release and it will be available in September. The presence of another application for Samsung TVs - CANAL+ Premiery in the APPS store may be a bit confusing for the end user. These two applications should finally be integrated. Fortunately, we log in to both applications with the same data.

For whom?

CANAL+ online on Samsung TVs is a brilliant service for fans of cinema and sports. CANAL+ itself emphasizes that it is not an online TV, such as WP Pilot. The biggest advantage of this platform is that most of its content is not available on other competing streaming services. Just for Klangor and Kruk alone, it's worth starting CANAL+ online at home. Sports fans will choose the Premier League, NBA, Polish Ekstraklasa, tennis tournaments or speedway. CANAL+ online also greatly simplifies the purchase of additional packages, such as HBO or ELEVEN SPORTS.
