Section of the main camera of the NOVA 9 model seemingly looks very promising (it is powerful and has a huge main eye), but in fact it contains only two of the visible four modules relevant to the user-50-megapixel standard module and 8-megapixel wide-angle module.In addition to them, Huawei installed a typically marketing, wide -angle macro module 2 megapixels (constant sharpness set at a distance of 4 centimeters) and a module for analyzing the depth of the stage (negligible from a utility point of view for the smartphone owner).

The phone switch is located at a standard, very comfortable height, but also reaching the volume control placed slightly higher will not prove to be too troublesome.The optical fingerprint reader was placed under the surface of the OLED screen.This is not the fastest design of this type on the smartphone market, but it works confidently, which is definitely the most important.

Only a hole of an additional microphone appeared on the flattened top of the frame.In turn, at the bottom of the housing we will see: the only phone speaker (it's a pity that this time was missing the stereo system), USB 2 socket 2.0 type C and SIM cards drawer, which holds two modules in Nano SIM format.NOVA 9 therefore does not have a 3.5 millimeter minijack headphone jack and does not allow you to expand memory using a card, even used in the P30 and P40 series, an unusual and expensive Nano Memory card.

Huawei Nova 9 - technical specification, performance, battery

Huawei based the construction of the NOVA 9 model on a strong, medium -shelf Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset, except that in connection with the commercial sanctions imposed two years ago by the US administration, Chinese can offer it only with 4G/LTE network support.The chipset has a standard built -in 5G Qualcomm X53 modem - in this case probably turned off programowo.Lack of 5G service is currently not a big problem in Poland (operators have still not received the allocation of bands under its full implementation), but...We buy a smartphone for at least two, sometimes three years, and the price of the Nova 9 model has been set at such a level that we will buy cheaper competitive devices with the same chipset and with an active 5G modem, such as Samsung Galaxy A 52s 5g or Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G Ne.

The phone also includes: 8 GB of operating memory, 128 GB of memory for data, two-band Wi-Fi 6, NFC card and a modern Bluetooth 5 module 5.2.

The manufacturer removed from the phone menu information about the version of the Android system used (contrary to earlier expectations, the Nova 9 offered in Europe has no Harmony OS system), leaving only the version of the overlay - EMUI 12 to the user's knowledge.0.1.When asked about this, the Polish branch of Huawei was silent about the system, but probably unnecessarily, because we have the current edition of Android 11, although of course still devoid of Google services.The overlay itself turns out to be very functional and...extremely similar to the Harmony OS 2 interface.0, and this additionally arouses my suspicion - what really stood in the way to the European premiere of Harmony OS (the more that he is also based on Android)?Unfortunately, I could not find out from the smartphone manufacturer, but only that Harmony OS will appear in Europe next year.

The table below presents detailed technical data of the NOVA 9 model and for comparison of last year's basic Huawei P40, which...is better done, has better performance, a clearly better camera and...It can be hunted at a similar and sometimes even lower price.

In everyday use, Nova 9 works very well.It reacts briskly to the orders, but it must be remembered that the lack of Google services means that part of the application that requires them to work will not start or will not work fully correctly.Replacements from the Company Appgallery store must be enough for us, which, however, is not always an option...Functionally sufficient or we will be forced to obtain programs (downloading files.APK) from external repositories, i.e. from outside the official store.It is also true, however, that less demanding people who are not strongly attached or forced to use Google services, to contactless payments in stores and to specific applications related to the GMS ecosystem have a chance to find quite well in the resources and services of the HMS ecosystem (HMSiMobile Services).

The performance of the Nova 9 model in the Huawei stable can be placed somewhere between the performance of P30, P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro smartphones (i.e. flagships from the turn of 2018/2019, which are also the last generations of devices with Google operating services) and the efficiency of last year's Huawei P40 series.So it's really good.Nova 9 also does not tend to appear thermal throttling.

The manufacturer has placed a battery with a reasonable, though not very shocking capacity of 4300 mAh.Multimedia used, however, Nova 9 will work for one to a half days, which is not a bad result, especially since Huawei has additionally equipped the smartphone power section with a fast charging function with a capacity of 66 W.Full charging will therefore last no more than 40 minutes, but on a daily basis, to maintain continuity of action, Huawei Nova 9 will only be satisfied with a quarter of a quarter of charging when we are around the socket.

Unfortunately, against the background of the competition, the results of Huawei Nova 9 in the battery test from the PCMark 2 application.0 do not look particularly encouraging.

Huawei Nova 9 - screen and quality of the displayed image

Bent on the sides, 6.57-inch OLED 120 Hz screen with FHD+ class resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels, 392 ppi) looks very good.The panel used supports 10-bit color coding, and can also display HDR content (supported formats are: HLG, HDR10 and HDR10+).It is all the more surprising that Nova 9 proved to be consistent only with Widevine security at the basic level of L3, i.e. on her screen movies from video streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+) if so, we will see only in SD quality.Thus, Huawei condemns us, as if by accident, to HD content from YouTube and from its own application Huawei Movies.

The smartphone display can work in three image refresh modes - default intelligent, 60 Hz and 120 Hz.Unfortunately, one of the effects of the use of custom software in your smartphone is also that for now I can not say with certainty how in practice adaptation mode is behaved (the smartphone, however, gains nearly 20 percent of the time of operation compared to 120 Hz mode).Huawei focuses on automatic adaptation also in terms of the resolution of the image seen (if we want to use the native resolution of the FHD+class at all times, then we need to modify the phone settings for this purpose) and in the scope of the displayed gamut (in the default mode the normal smartphone decides whether it decides whether it decides whether it decides whether it decides whether the normal smartphone itself decides whetherJust use the SRGB color space or maybe it is worth using the cinema DCI-P3).

Natural mode

During the screen operation in the default natural mode, our test application forced it only to display the basic SRGB space, but the quality of color calibration turned out to be completely good.The measured color temperature of the white was a bit too cool (6796 K), but the average color reproduction error Delta E 2000 was still solid 2.78.Using the available correction, the color temperature, in turn, meant the white temperature of 5852 K (heat setting) and 7748 K (cold setting), i.e. none of these settings will provide us with better color calibration than the default setting.

The maximum brightness of the image available from the level of the brightness adjustment slider is quite typical for the OLED 457 cd/m2 panels.In the automatic brightness setting, the smartphone screen, however, conquers the luminance of white with strong lighting existing up to 623 cd/m2 and this is already sufficient for the image to be well readable outside.

Expressive mode

Its activation means passing the screen to the permanent display of the cinema gamutu DCI-P3.However, this time the default color tone is strongly cooled (the white temperature is 8226 K instead of reference 6500 K).The error of their mapping the average Deltae 2000 is much too high 6.31 (a very good result is considered below 2).

However, the perspective of constant use of the wide space of DCI-P3 is tempting, and therefore I decided to check if it is possible to manually improve the loyalty of displayed colors.It turns out that the usual selection of the heat setting in the color temperature section is not enough (we get the value of 6736 K), but when the indicator we move a little further on the color circle towards the yellow (as in the picture below on the left), then we will hit practically at the point- for me it was very solid 6523 k.On the gamut chart (downstairs inside) you can immediately see that the measuring points (wheels) are much better now in reference squares, and the measured error average Deltae 2000 has fallen from an earlier value of 6.31 to 3.29 - small, but still deficienciesscreen in displaying deep greenery and red (see differences between the white and gray triangle on the gamut chart) in any way we will not compensate the available settings.

Huawei Nova 9 - Cameras and quality of photos taken

The main smartphone camera consists of four photographic modules: standard 50 MP without optical image stabilization (default photos at 12.5 MP, matrix 1/1.56 "with Ryyb color filter, lens F/1.9, 27 millimeters equivalent, PDAF), wide -angle with a resolution of 8 MP (f/2.2, FF, 18 millimeters equivalent), macro with a resolution of 2 MP (f/2.4, constant sharpness set to 4 centimeters) and from the module for analyzing the depth of the stage.They are accompanied by a single diode lamp illuminating the photographed scene.As for photographic standards, Huawei is rather poor here.It is worth noting, however, that Nova 9 saves photos using a wide color space DCI-P3.

The front camera placed in the hole in the screen is also not very sophisticated, but as it turns out, a unit with a resolution of 32 megapixels with optics without an autofocus and brightness f/2.0 (focal equivalent for a small picture 25 millimeters).

Daily photos

Already at first glance you can see that photos from the smartphone camera do not tend to excessively conquer color saturation - you can even say that they are colorfully quite restrained and have a slightly cool tone.A completely different matter is the big difference in the colors of the same scene photographed with wide and standard modules - and this is less good information.It is also difficult to praise the wide -angle module for the quality of registered details - they are sharpened programmatically, and then the image is subject to a strong technique of abolving, which makes the details average average and sometimes look quite artificial.But the camera software is good at mastering chromatic aberrations.

The standard module presents a much higher class of detail.He also copes better with the high -dynamic lighting in the scene.

However, since Huawei has accustomed us to the fact that each subsequent generation of its smartphones has a clearly better camera, it was difficult for me to refrain from directly comparing photos from the Nova 9 and older P40 and P30 (I deliberately chose cheaper models without pro in the name).It is clear that the automation of the Nova 9 smartphone camera likes a cooler and more restrained color tone (in the last topic close to it to the P30 camera, although here the general tone is clearly more pleasant).P40, however, focuses on a higher contrast and stronger color saturation.

Another visible tendency of the Nova 9 camera is the constant fight against electronic noise.It is true that the software is doing well with it, but...Details suffer from this, especially in shadows - they are clearly weaker than in both competitors, with P30 wins with even a lower default photo resolution (see sections 1: 1 from the above photos - Frame sharpness of the photo, stucco, monitoring cameras).

Interestingly, the image quality from the Nova 9 smartphone camera is not bad at all, however...Since we can buy older models with similar performance, with better cameras and in the case of P30 additionally with Google services, things begin to take on a slightly different color.

Digital zoom

The NOVA 9 smartphone camera has no tele module - the manufacturer has decided that it will be replaced by a digital zoom from a standard module with a high resolution matrix of 50 mp.The trouble is that Huawei's trust in the work of their programmers this time was not the best idea - because the staff with a digital zoom 2x have clearly weaker quality of details, and in shadows reduction systems destroy them to a significant extent.Of course, watching such frames on the smartphone screen or by sending them to social networking sites, the problem will be irrelevant and...That's probably why the Chinese allowed themselves such photographic nonchalance.

The problem increases as the digital zoom level increases.At a maximum of 10x, loyalty of details becomes even conventional, and the details begin to resemble the works of famous impressionists.

And in order not to be groundless in the matter of the fact that the lack of a tele module, even weak, can not be so easy to compensate with a digital zoom, I suggest another comparison of Nova 9, P40 and P30 cameras...This time for 10x digital zoom.In a large reduction, it can be considered that Nova 9 is not particularly bad in this comparison, but this is only an illusion.

It is enough to see images in a 1: 1 scale to see that the details of photos from the new Huawei smartphone resemble an impressionist image more, in the photo from the P30 model is much better, although the details are still quite soft, and last year P40 wins in this clash.

Night photos

Night photos w wypadku aparatu smartfonu Nova 9 są kolejnym zaskakującym testowym wątkiem.On the one hand, we are dealing with a situation that was the norm, but somehow until 2018 - in night mode we cannot use a wide -angle module.Until you would like to say...Huawei, no jokes!The case, however, takes on a slightly different dimension after using the wide -angle module in automatic mode at night.The photos taken look like they were taken in a dedicated night mode.The same applies to the standard module.

On the one hand, it's good, because this fact means that the Nova 9 wide -angle module is useful in such conditions.So why did he not appear as standard in night mode?I have no idea.It is a pity, because using the automatic mode at night we do not guarantee that the automation will always optimally set the exposure parameters.A great example of this are the following examples - night photos taken after each other.This means that when photographing the module at night, it is worth taking 3-4 photos of a given scene and then choose the best.

The standard module works normally in night mode and such photos will be much more predictable quality.They are attractively exposed, they have attractive colors and...Unfortunately, too strong, the technique of abusing can again specifically clean the image from the details.Nevertheless, the night frames from the standard module viewed in the reduction look good.

The camera interface encourages us to use in night mode from the 2x digital zoom setting (icon displayed by default).Such photos again are attractive exposed and have good colors (which should not be surprising, since it is a digital zoom from the standard module), but we have to reckon with a significant decrease in the quality of registered details.However, such images will still be suitable for social networking sites.

Further wading into a digital night zoom is of course possible (even up to 10x), but I do not recommend this procedure - both because of the poor quality of the created photo and the lack of optical stabilization in the Nova 9 smartphone apparatus.

We already know that the Huawei P40 camera is noticeably better than the Nova 9 model, but...Will the old P30 keep his field at night?Here are examples of two scenes intercepted by both smartphones in night mode.Such a comparison confirms that the noise technique works in the NOVA 9 apparatus more aggressively - the photo from the P30 has a slight visible noise, but also retains more details and brings details better from dark areas.

However, the devil is in the details as always.In the second example (scene above) you can see the strange behavior of the NOVA 9 camera software in the case of the lighting frame falling on the left side of the light (in the left, upper corner of the following felling).Huawei P30 tries to keep a smooth transition between changes in its brightness, and Nova 9 made him a clear, spot -like spot.Pictures from the P30 apparatus also look better on the P30 of the P30 of Ptals of Restaurant Sofas, although of course the level of noise is in the case of a senior smartphone higher.

Bokeh effect

Huawei has equipped the NOVA 9 camera with a module for analyzing the depth of the stage, which in theory is to ensure perfectly precise cutting off the main plan from the blurred background.I checked the effectiveness of the program technique for adding a bokeh effect on several test, I do not hide quite difficult scenes and...The Huawei Nova 9 camera was not always satisfactory in them (see images below).You can say that I pick on, but smartphones costing half of what Nova 9 managed with a thorough selection of the statue or grille.It is therefore worth, at least until possible update, also in the case of bokeh photos to take more than one shot.

As for the bokeh effect in daytime photos, I get the impression that it is strangely unnatural.This was clearly seen in the daily scene with the new monument of Warsaw presidents - the image looks like after a strong operation of the HDR function, which means that the blur does not fit into the main objects.

In this situation, I could only do one...He will again compare the operation of this function in the NOVA 9 smartphone apparatus with P40 and P30, and here are its effects.It cannot be hidden that the photo from the Nova 9 camera is the least natural in these three

Macro module
