I do not believe: Samsung will share the sad fate of Huawei? 61 Galaxy models banned in Russia!

Samsung has run into a lot of trouble - the Russian government does not agree to sell 61 models of the brand's smartphones in its country. What is the reason for such a serious decision of the authorities?

Samsung will lose the Russian market?

For several years, relations between Samsung and Russia have not been easy. This is because there is a dispute between the Swiss brand Sqwin SA and the Korean manufacturer. Sqwin accuses Samsung of infringing a patent for an electronic payment system, registered eight years ago in Russia.

After years of court struggle, Russia decided to make a much more serious move - it is a ban on the import and sale of Galaxy equipment.

The list of banned devices includes devices manufactured after 2017. This is because Samsung introduced its payment system (Samsung Pay) in Russia at the end of 2016.

The banned smartphones include such models as the folded Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold, flagships from the Galaxy S21, S10, S9 and S8 series, Galaxy S20 FE and the budget, four-year-old Galaxy J5.

According to the court ruling, "the court prohibits the operation of the Samsung Pay payment service in Russia, as well as the import of devices with its support to the country."

Samsung appealed against the verdict - the brand has been doing great on the Russian market so far, so this is a big blow for the Korean manufacturer. According to the Counterpoint Research report, Samsung was so far the second largest smartphone manufacturer in Russia in 2021.

Will a similar fate await smartphones equipped with other payment systems, i.e. Google Pay and Apple Pay? This is stated by, inter alia, Eldar Murtazin, Mobile Research Group's Leading Analyst. However, it is probably a bit early for such speculations.
