Mateview from Huawei - a test of an ergonomic work monitor

Huawei, which for a long time was known for the production of mobile phones, is more and more boldly entering the market of other electronic devices. In addition to laptops, network devices, smartwatches and headphones, the company also introduced its first monitors: Mateview, which we test and Mateview GT, intended for players.

Mateview is undoubtedly the flagship monitor of the Chinese concern. With a screen with a diagonal of 28.2 inches and 3: 2 aspect ratio, IPS panel and 4K+ resolution and many other advanced functions are a product that you can certainly boast of on the desk. You can see that when designing its devices, the company attaches great importance to the details.

Good workmanship

The quality of the monitor and its design is in my opinion at a very high level. The housing is made of matted metal. Thanks to the small frames (94% of the front surface is the screen), the monitor makes a very minimalist impression, which is still strengthened by a simple and slim base.

On the back of the stand, which is permanently in force to the screen, a power socket (USB-C) and HDMI and Display Port socket are placed. On the side of the stand we will find 2 USB ports and one USB-C, which we can send a video signal from a computer. The screen itself is placed on a ball jet, which allows it to be tilted vertically in the range -5 + 18 degrees.Setting the screen height is also simple and we can do it with one hand. The height adjustment range is 7 - 18 cm from the desk surface.

Screen 3: 2

There are already a lot of 28-inch monitors on the market. However, most of them have a proportions of 16:10 or 16: 9.Finding a monitor with a 3: 2 ratio is not easy.

Why is the 3: 2 screen becoming more and more popular?More and more laptops are equipped with it and the trend also breaks into stationary monitors. The reason is not difficult to guess - the 3: 2 screen has more information vertically - it can be helpful when editing large documents, working with programming tools and graphics processing. If someone needs even more space, of course, nothing prevents you from buying another monitor or a panoramic 49 inch model, which is somehow a combination of two 26-28 inches monitors.

Mateview with its resolution of 3840 × 2560 is part of this new trend. However, the solutions used go far beyond the changed proportions of the screen and the resolution.

Connection options

Mateview od Huawei – test ergonomicznego monitora do pracy

What is worth paying attention to are the different options for connecting the monitor. We have a HDMI port available (attention, only in version 2.0 – kabel trzeba zakupić osobno), kabel mini Display Port -> Display Port oraz kabel USB-C.In addition, we can also use a wiFi wireless connection from compatible devices. In the case of Huawei phones, pairing them with the monitor requires the location of the smartphone on the stand with the NFC module and the connection is established automatically. The obtained image, however, is unnaturally scaled and e.g..Watching movies is not perfect because the image is distorted.

If we want to connect the Windows laptop wirelessly, then you need to search for a screen nearby and confirm the choice on the monitor. After a while, the image from the laptop is broadcast by WiFi on the monitor. The largest resolution that was obtained is 3000 × 2,000 pixels.

Podłączenie bezprzewodowego ekranu

The USB-C side port allows us to charge the phone or other devices with power to 65 watts. So if we connect a laptop to a USB-C monitor, it will be charged and its image will be displayed on the screen. What's more - the mouse connected by USB to the monitor and the keyboard will pass the laptop signal. In this way, we create a simple docking station, connected with just one cable.

Connection options

Two 5-watt speakers and 2 microphones are placed in the stand, which will be useful for teleconferences. Both mini-smokers play their role when playing sound, but they will probably work rather to listen to the sound of Windows starting.Watching movies or advanced sound effects require the purchase of stronger speaker sets or headphones.Anyway, looking at the specification, it is clear that this is a monitor addressed to a specific group of recipients - people using a computer as a work tool.It is rather not a monitor for players who usually need devices with a larger image width and greater refresh rate. The monitor also lack the FreeSync or G-Sync function. If we are looking for something to play from this manufacturer, I recommend looking at the Mateview GT model with a curved, panoramic screen.

Image

Each monitor is calibrated by packaging and the manufacturer provides the appropriate certificate in the set.Mateview also has a DisplayHDR 400 certificate, which should be appreciated by professionals dealing with graphics or video processing.During the operation, the monitor did not tire your eyes and the large screen and resolution gave convenient access to information in individual applications. The viewing angles are very high and the screen brightness is large and quite even. Thanks to the matt coating, the screen does not reflect a lot of light.

Control

The monitor functions are controlled by means of a tactile belt under the bottom edge of the screen. It is an active surface with a width of about 10 cm and at the beginning the control requires some habit. If we remember that individual pressing allows you to select the item from the menu and double for returning to the previous page, then setting up the parameters will not be a problem.A bit strange that not all functions can be set in this way - some of them - e.g..Firmware update - they require connecting the mouse.

The monitor can also be configured using the AI Life Huawei application. Thanks to this, you can, for example.Simply set the password to the WiFi network in which the monitor will operate - otherwise it would be necessary to connect the keyboard.

Control using a touch panel

Summary

Mateview is in my opinion a very good monitor for work. The high resolution and working surface of the screen make the use of the application more convenient.Image quality is very good and the available connection options make Mateview work well in combination with many types of devices.Using a USB-C connection will also make the desk a tangle of cables disappear-the monitor will charge us a laptop and the laptop will pass the video signal to the monitor.

I recommend the monitor to all who put great emphasis on ergonomics at the computer. At the price of PLN 2999, however, this is not a cheap offer, but you just pay for the quality of workmanship and comfort.
