The primary place to download free apps for Android smartphones is the Google Play store. It is a pre-installed application on all smartphones with this system, additionally available on the website in the browser.
The exception here are users of smartphones with Android from the manufacturer Huawei, they can download their free applications and games from the program and from the Huawei AppGallery website.

Where to download free applications for MS Windows
In the case of computers with Windows, the matter is more complex. For many years, Microsoft did not make its application store available from its own system with previous versions of the system, which made its users accustomed to downloading free applications or games directly from websites.
With Windows 10, this bug has been fixed, but the resources of this store still do not meet the expectations of users of this system. You will find the most popular free applications in it, but, for example, after entering competing solutions such as Google Chrome or Libre Office, you may come across only paid applications that pretend to be the right ones. So in the case of Windows, it's best to download applications from their manufacturers' websites.

You don't need to know about manual software installation and package dependencies. Just select the free application you are interested in in the store, and it will install in the background, just like applications installed on Windows.
Not only advantages. Free apps also carry risks!
As we know from many attacks on users, especially Android and Windows devices, free apps also carry risks. Worse, we are not 100% sure that, for example, an application downloaded from the official Google Play store will be safe for our smartphone.
We have to rely on common sense here and evaluate the given item that we find in the mobile store. For example, if we download a banking application on a smartphone, let's use the link provided on the official website of our bank. Same with other known apps. In mobile stores, there are often applications that pretend to be the official ones, especially the most popular ones, which can cause us a lot of damage, including the loss of money from our bank accounts.
Avoid these methods of downloading free applications!
This is a post about free applications. However, if we know that the application we want to download is paid and we find a free version in the store, we can assume it pretends to be an official position, so it will be safer to skip it and not install it on your device.
Similarly, we do not download and install applications that someone sent us to our mailbox or messenger or those that we found on websites or services unknown to anyone. A big threat are also well-known websites with illegally shared paid applications by their users, the desire to download free versions from them can also end in deplorable consequences for us.
